These Early Birds Gobble

I’m usually a very solid sleeper, falling back to sleep pretty easily after I awake during the night. But when I found myself wide awake one morning this week just before 5am, less than an hour before my usual rising time, I decided to get up and get going.

I’m fortunate to live in a safe environment that enables me– with appropriate reflective gear and blinking lights on my jacket and ankles — to be a regular pre-dawn runner/walker. Whatever the weather, I head out before any in my house is up. It’s a habit I cherish; in fact, one the rare occasions that I’m not able to do it, I find myself cranky and out of sorts for much of the day. My favorite poet-artist Brian Andreas captured the sentiment perfectly in this poem, Before Dawn, that hangs by our door:

I was joined watched by some of the local wildlife, wild turkeys roosting in the trees of my suburban neighborhood. They started calling to each other across a few blocks, probably debating whether to “fly” down to the ground or to hit the snooze button and stay on their branches for a bit longer. Although you can’t really see any of the birds, you can hear a few seconds of their chatter.

By the time I got home — with my usual cup of coffee from the nearby coffee shop — I’d decide to put the mostly brown bananas on the counter to good use. Instead of banana bread, I usually make muffins; they bake faster and are a good grab-and-go snack or breakfast. I tossed some frozen wild Maine blueberries into half of the double batch and popped them into the oven.

While they baked, I did a couple of rounds of the border on the Wee Penny baby dress. I’m hoping to finish it tomorrow.

After I’d done a bit of quality assurance testing of the muffins (they passed), I dove into the day. When I plotted out my daily schedule, I add “nap” to the list. As regularly happens with items on my to-do list, I didn’t complete that one. There’s always tomorrow!

How do other people do this?

Regular readers and those who know me “beyond the blog” know that knitting helps keep me balanced. I love the creativity and challenge, but the repetition and focus help to quiet my mind — and I’m convinced, make me a better person.

I love having something to concentrate on — to do — during life’s “down times.” Waiting for a medical appointment, watching TV, sitting around talking after supper, or riding a bus, train, or plane.

My daily morning run serves the same purpose — getting out by myself, moving, breathing. A psychologist friend once explained that I’m not “in relation” to anyone during that time — I’m not a mother, wife, daughter, consultant, sister — so I can just be me. Makes sense. As my favorite poet-artist, Brian Andreas of Storypeople, conveys in this “story” that hangs by our back door.

The power of these two habits has become abundantly and viscerally clear in the past day. I used the last of my yarn on the Gidday Baby sweater on yesterday’s flight.


I hadn’t brought the next skein from home. Ah well. I still had my book and running stuff in my bag, which I’d checked through to my “final destination” because the flight was totally full.

But my flight was canceled, and I ended up flying into another city and renting a car to drive to my “final destination.” However, my bag — which I’d taken a photo of just in case — never arrived.

 And, despite this lovely photo, it didn’t and still hasn’t. It’s not even been located, according to the automated customer service system.

So I find myself without my knitting, without my running stuff, without my clean clothes (except for new underwear from Walgreen’s – yes, 2 pack of cotton bikini), without my library book. Except for the undies, I haven’t had time to remedy any of these situations. I’m feeling the most out-of-sorts — downright cranky and occasionally weepy — that I have in quite a while.

So I wonder — after a very long and busy day, how do people do this life thing without knitting or running?

Tiny Treasures

On my daily morning run or walk, my mind shifts from internal – making lists, praying, solving the problems of the world — to external, noticing the sights and sounds around me. I’ve started to pause for a quick photo to record something that captivates me, usually something natural like a sunrise, plants, clouds, wild turkeys (which are simultaneously disgusting and fascinating).

My brother Luke, a talented blogger (go check him out), regularly posts a photo under the “Beauty All Around Me” category. He says that looking for beauty in the world, no matter where he may be, helps him to see the beauty in the world. A helpful exercise any time but especially when life seems dark.

In a little “pocket park,” I came across a collection of lovely Fairy Gardens, part of a local Garden Festival. These tiny worlds were just exquisite, each carefully created from natural and human objects. #BeautyAllAroundMe indeed!

Love on the Street

I don’t usually take my phone when I run in the morning. I don’t want to be connected or reachable.

But recently I’ve been walking, instead of running, in an attempt to let an injury heal and have started listening to some of my favorite podcasts. Since my phone is also a camera, I sometimes get to capture images that catch my eye. Like today…
